Behind the Lyrics of In Spirit and Truth
We have great hopes that In Spirit and Truth will become a meaningful song in times of personal and corporate worship. Here is an excerpt from the chorus lyrics and a couple of thoughts behind them.
“We lift our hands to You and come as we are. You make our minds renewed and open our hearts. Drawing us into Your light and out from the dark. We worship You in Spirit and Truth.”
When we enter into a time of worship it is good to know that God accepts us exactly as we are. It’s the same feeling we have when we are with a close friend that we can hang out in our home with us when it’s dirty and we’re all wearing old sweat pants. The friends we have that we don’t feel compelled to impress or even agree with about everything. The people that you feel known by warts and all and loved anyway. That’s how God wants us to feel when we enter into times of worship. In the same ways that we are transformed through conversations and being known in closely connected human relationships we also don’t stay the same when we spend time in the presence of God.
When we draw near to God similar but greater transformation happens. We begin to become more like Jesus. The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin and compels us to offer our spirit up in humble repentance to align with His will and see our hearts and minds renewed. This renewal leads to a change in the way we live. Our hearts are opened up to care for and share the Gospel with people who don’t know the relationship that God has made available to them. We begin to recognize that living in the light of God’s love is infinitely better than living in the darkness of our own self-serving or pleasure seeking ways. Times of reflection and deeper connection with God compel us to surrender and they draw us out of that darkness like a moth to a front porch light on a dark night.
We hope this song helps create an atmosphere for you to find that space to worship God in Spirit and Truth, so that He can work in and through you in ways that are real and tangible to the people around you.
